Botanical name  -Nelumbo nucifera
Family                 -Nymphaceae
English name      -Indian lotus
Sanskrit names   - Padma, Nalina, Aravinda, Mahotpala, Sahasrapatra, Kamala, Satapatra,
                                Kusesa, Pankeruha, Namarasa, Sarasa, Sarasiruha, visaprasuna, Rajiva.
                                Padmini (Flower with root, leave, stalk & seeds) - Nalini, Kamalini                              
Singhalese name- Nelum

Verities 1. White – Pundarika
              2. Red - Kokana
              3. Blue - Indivara
Parts used   -flowers, stamens, seeds, leaves & roots.
Properties:      
Rasa          Madhura, Kashaya, Tikta
Guna         Laghu, Snigdha, Piccila
Veerya      Sheeta              
Vipaka      Madhura
Attributes / Karma:
Alleviates Pitta & Kapha.
Flowers- improve the complexion. Cures excessive thirst, burning sensation, blood disorders, erysiphilus, poisoning, (Visphota) boils.
Tender leaves (Samvartika) - cures burning sensation, excessive thirst, dysurea, anorectal diseases, bleeding diseases.
Seeds (Karnika) – cleanses the mouth, cure excessive thirst & blood disorders.
Stamens (Keshara) –Aphrodisiac, constipative, cure excessive thirst, burning sensation, blood disorders, piles, poisoning, and edema.
Roots (Mrunala) – Aphrodisiac, hard to digest, galactogogue, constipative, cure burning sensation, blood disorders.
Padmini – Madhura, Lavana, cures Raktapitta, Kapha. Vishtambhi. Vitiates Vata.
                                                                       
Medicinal uses
External
Acute fever – leaves pasted with Amalaka & sandalwoods is used for body application.
Headache – pasted flower stalks are used to apply on forehead.
Fever with burning sensation – patent let to sleep on leaves.
Skin diseases – pasted seeds are use locally.
Internal
Bleeding disorders – decoction or syrup of flowers is used.
Bleeding piles – stamens pasted with butter, sugar & honey is used.
